MeritPoint© Explanation

Merit Points accumulate for every School Chess Association sponsored tournament that you play in.  A minimum of 1 Merit Point is awarded for all players in all tournaments.

For a 5 round tournament Merit Points are equal to score, 1 point for each win and 0.5 point for each draw.

For a 4 round tournament Merit Points are normalized to 5 rounds.  Merit Points will be equal to score multiplied by 5/4 and rounded up to the nearest 0.25

For a 4 or 5 round tournament first place is awarded 6 merit points total.  Any undefeated players who had no voluntary bye rounds are also awarded 6 Merit Points total.  Other trophies, except the Novice trophy, are awarded 5 merit points total.  Novice trophy winners receive merit points corresponding to their score as described above (changed 03/02/2011).  Players who win a trophy get the trophy points, they do not also get points for their score.  Note that medals, medallions, ribbons, Golden Knights, and certificates are not trophies for Merit Point purposes.

The STATEWIDE Elementary/Primary tournament is 7 rounds awards 1 merit point for each win or 8 merit points total for 1st place and 7 merit points total for other trophies.

For the Tournament of Champions tournament first place and those with perfect scores are awarded 6 Merit Points.  All others are awarded Merit Points normalized to 5 rounds.

Team vs. Team Merit Points are normalized to 5 rounds.  That means if a player wins all rounds the player receives 5 merit points.  Merit points are prorated for fewer or more rounds and rounded up to the nearest 0.25 point.  An additional Merit Point is awarded if the player is undefeated and played all rounds not assigned a full point bye (no voluntary byes).

Doubles Merit Points are normalized to 5 rounds.  That means if a player wins all of their games it's worth 5 Merit Points for each partner from play.  Merit points are prorated for fewer or more rounds and rounded up to the nearest 0.25 point.  Each medal winner is awarded 1 additional Merit Point.
